Bunion Treatment in Atlanta, GA

A bunion is more than a bump — it is a progressive change in the alignment of your big toe joint. The good news is that not every bunion needs surgery, and the ones that do can often be corrected in our Atlanta office rather than a hospital. United Foot & Leg treats bunions at every stage, from early irritation to advanced deformity.

Dr. Morris Explains Bunion Treatment

A short video walkthrough is on the way — in the meantime, the full guide below covers everything Dr. Morris discusses in the exam room.

What is bunion?

A bunion (hallux valgus) forms when the long bone behind the big toe gradually drifts outward while the big toe leans toward the second toe, pushing the joint's head into a prominent bump. The joint becomes inflamed, red, and painful in shoes, and the deformity tends to worsen over time. Smaller bumps behind the pinky toe (bunionettes) are treated the same way.

Common symptoms

  • A bony bump at the base of the big toe
  • Redness, swelling, or soreness over the bump
  • Pain in the big toe joint when walking or in shoes
  • The big toe leaning toward or under the second toe
  • Thickened skin or corns where toes rub together
  • Stiffness or limited motion in the big toe
  • Difficulty finding comfortable, normal-width shoes

Common causes & risk factors

  • Inherited foot structure — the largest factor by far
  • Footwear with narrow or pointed toe boxes aggravating the joint
  • Flat foot mechanics that destabilize the joint
  • Arthritis in the big toe joint
  • Injury to the foot or toe
  • Occupations and activities with prolonged standing

When should you see a foot doctor?

  • The bump is painful, red, or inflamed
  • You are changing shoes or activities because of the bunion
  • The toe is drifting further over time
  • Over-the-counter pads are no longer keeping you comfortable
  • The joint feels stiff or arthritis is developing

How we evaluate it

Dr. Morris grades the deformity — with on-site X-ray when appropriate — measures the joint angles, and assesses how the bunion affects your gait. The right treatment depends on how far the toe has drifted, your pain level, and your goals, not on a one-size-fits-all protocol.

Treatment options at United Foot & Leg

Conservative bunion care

Wider footwear, protective padding, toe spacers, arch support or orthotics for underlying mechanics, and activity modification relieve symptoms at every stage — and are often all that early-stage bunions need.

In-office bunion surgery

For patients who want the deformity corrected, selected bunion corrections are performed in our office under local anesthesia. Most patients can walk right away and return to normal activity quickly — the specifics depend on the procedure your foot requires.

Hospital-based reconstruction

More advanced deformities are corrected at the Atlanta Center for Foot and Ankle Surgery in Sandy Springs, where Dr. Morris performs his surgical cases.

Cosmetic and comfort refinement

After functional correction, residual prominence and appearance concerns are discussed as part of our cosmetic foot surgery practice.

What to expect

Your first visit ends with a clear picture: how advanced the bunion is, what conservative care can achieve, and whether correction makes sense for you. Nothing is forced — many bunions are managed non-surgically for years.

Recovery & follow-up

Conservative care has no downtime. In-office bunion correction is performed under local anesthetic and most patients walk the same day — recovery guidance is specific to the procedure chosen for your foot.
