Neuropathy & Nerve Pain Treatment in Atlanta, GA

Nerve pain in the feet — burning, tingling, numbness, or a feeling like walking on pebbles — is one of the most frustrating problems patients bring to us. It often starts quietly: a little numbness at the toes, a burning sensation at night. United Foot & Leg provides peripheral neuropathy evaluation and treatment for patients throughout Atlanta, Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, Buckhead and surrounding North Atlanta communities.

Nerve symptoms deserve a real diagnosis, not a shrug. Numb feet are not just uncomfortable — they are a leading reason diabetic patients develop ulcers they never felt. Getting the cause identified and the feet protected is the whole point of an evaluation.

What is peripheral neuropathy?

Peripheral neuropathy means the nerves that carry sensation from your feet to your brain are not working the way they should. Depending on which nerves are involved, it can cause burning pain, electric-shock sensations, pins and needles, loss of balance, or numbness. Diabetes is the most common cause in the United States, but it is far from the only one — thyroid problems, vitamin deficiencies, alcohol use, chemotherapy, autoimmune disease, and nerve entrapment can all produce similar symptoms, which is why the evaluation matters.

Common symptoms

  • Burning, stabbing, or electric-shock pain in the feet or toes
  • Tingling or “pins and needles”, often worse at night
  • Numbness — feet that feel like they are wrapped in socks
  • A feeling of walking on pebbles or cardboard
  • Loss of balance or unsteadiness when walking
  • Hypersensitivity — sheets or socks that feel painful
  • Muscle weakness in the foot in advanced cases

Common causes & risk factors

  • Diabetes and elevated blood sugar (the most common cause)
  • Vitamin B12 or other nutrient deficiencies
  • Thyroid or kidney disease
  • Chemotherapy or certain medications
  • Alcohol use
  • Nerve compression or entrapment (including tarsal tunnel syndrome)
  • Autoimmune conditions and, in many cases, no identified cause at all

When should you see a foot doctor?

  • Numbness, burning, or tingling that lasts more than a few days
  • Loss of sensation — you injure your feet without noticing
  • You have diabetes or prediabetes and new foot symptoms of any kind
  • Balance problems or frequent stumbling
  • Nerve pain that keeps you up at night
  • A sore, blister, or cut on a foot you cannot feel

How we evaluate it

Your visit starts with a careful sensory and neurological examination of both feet, a review of your health history and medications, and simple in-office testing of protective sensation. On-site imaging is available when a pinched nerve, structural problem, or ulceration is suspected. When the pattern suggests a cause outside the foot itself, Dr. Morris coordinates lab work and co-management with your primary physician so the underlying condition is addressed, not just the symptoms.

Treatment options at United Foot & Leg

Treating the underlying cause

When a reversible cause is identified — a vitamin deficiency, thyroid abnormality, or blood-sugar control issue — addressing it is the most important step. For diabetic patients, this goes hand in hand with preventive foot care.

Symptom management

Where medically appropriate, medication can reduce burning and shooting pain enough to restore sleep and quality of life. We prescribe conservatively and monitor closely.

In-office topical and light therapy

Non-invasive options, including transdermal medication with red light therapy (TheraDermix Allevea), are available in office for pain, inflammation, and nerve-related discomfort. At-home devices are also available.

Protective foot care

For numb feet, prevention is treatment: professional nail and callus care, footwear guidance, and scheduled exams catch problems while they are still small. Custom or over-the-counter insoles can reduce pressure points you can no longer feel.

What to expect

You leave the first visit with a probable cause, a treatment plan, and — if sensation is reduced — a concrete schedule for preventive care. Nerve pain often improves in stages rather than overnight; some forms are managed rather than cured, and we are honest about which is which.

Recovery & follow-up

There is no procedural downtime — this is evaluation and medical management. Symptom relief from medication or therapy is typically reassessed within a few weeks, and preventive visits follow the schedule Dr. Morris sets based on your sensation and risk level.
