Dr. Morris Explains Toenail Fungus Treatment

A short video walkthrough is on the way — in the meantime, the full guide below covers everything Dr. Morris discusses in the exam room.

What is onychomycosis (fungal toenail)?

Toenail fungus (onychomycosis) is an infection of the nail by fungus or yeast. It makes the nail thicken, turn yellow, brown or white, crumble at the edge, and sometimes lift from the nail bed. It rarely goes away on its own, and it can spread to other nails, to the skin (athlete's foot), and to people who share floors, towels, or nail tools with you.

Common symptoms

  • Yellow, brown, or white discoloration of the nail
  • Thickening of the nail that becomes hard to trim
  • Brittle, crumbly, or ragged nails
  • Nail lifting or separating from the nail bed
  • Slight odor from the affected nail
  • Discomfort or pressure when wearing shoes

Common causes & risk factors

  • Fungi entering through small cracks in the nail or surrounding skin
  • Walking barefoot in warm, damp public places — locker rooms, pools, saunas
  • Prior athlete's foot infection
  • Heavy sweating and closed-toe shoes
  • Nail injury, which opens the door to infection
  • Diabetes, reduced circulation, or a weakened immune system

When should you see a foot doctor?

  • The nail is thickened, discolored, or crumbling and not improving
  • Over-the-counter products have not worked
  • The nail is painful, lifting, or catching on socks
  • You have diabetes or circulation problems — nail infections raise your risk of secondary problems
  • More than one nail is involved or the infection is spreading

How we evaluate it

Dr. Morris examines the nail and discusses your history and goals. Not every thickened nail is fungus — trauma, psoriasis, and other conditions can look similar — so an accurate diagnosis guides which treatment is worth your money.

Treatment options at United Foot & Leg

Laser treatment for nail disease

Our Cutera NdYag 1064 laser treats the nail on both feet. It is often combined with topical medication, and together they can improve even stubborn cases. The treatment is done in the office and there is no recovery period.

Topical antifungal therapy

Prescription-strength topical medication applied to the nail and nail bed can work for milder infections and as a companion to laser treatment.

Oral antifungal medication

For deeper or more extensive infections, oral medication may be appropriate. Dr. Morris reviews your liver health and current medications before this option is considered.

Nail care and debridement

Professional thinning and trimming of thick fungal nails reduces pressure, makes topical treatment work better, and keeps you comfortable.

What to expect

Fungal nails improve slowly — a healthy nail takes months to grow out, so realistic timelines matter. Treatment begins at your appointment, and progress is typically reviewed over follow-up visits. Results depend on how much of the nail is involved and the treatment chosen; individual results vary.

Recovery & follow-up

Laser and topical treatments have no downtime. You are advised on keeping feet dry, disinfecting shoes, and protecting family members from shared exposure so the infection does not return.
