Heel Pain Treatment in Atlanta, GA

That sharp stab under your heel when you first stand up in the morning has a name — and a treatment plan. Heel pain is one of the most common complaints we see at United Foot & Leg, and most causes can be diagnosed and treated without surgery. The first step is figuring out which structure is actually hurting.

What is heel pain?

Heel pain is not one condition — it is a symptom with several possible sources. The tissue under the arch (plantar fascia), the Achilles tendon behind the heel, the heel bone itself, and the nerves around the heel can each be the true culprit. Identifying the right source is what separates treatment that works from months of guessing.

Common symptoms

  • Sharp, stabbing pain under the heel with the first steps in the morning
  • Pain after sitting or resting, easing as you move (start-up pain)
  • Aching or burning in the bottom of the heel
  • Pain at the back of the heel, especially pushing off or climbing
  • Swelling or a tender bump behind the heel
  • Pain that worsens with activity or after standing all day

Common causes & risk factors

  • Plantar fasciitis — the most common cause of pain under the heel
  • Achilles tendinitis — pain at the back of the heel
  • Heel bone bruise or stress injury
  • Heel spur, which may develop alongside long-standing fascia strain
  • Nerve entrapment causing burning heel pain
  • Poor footwear, sudden increases in activity, or standing on hard floors
  • Arthritis or systemic conditions in some patients

When should you see a foot doctor?

  • Heel pain lasts more than a few weeks or keeps returning
  • Pain is severe enough to change how you walk
  • There is swelling, redness, or warmth in the heel
  • You feel a popping sensation followed by pain
  • Home rest, ice, and better shoes are not fixing it

How we evaluate it

Your evaluation starts with a hands-on exam that locates the tender structure, reviews your activity and footwear, and checks your gait and arch mechanics. On-site X-ray and diagnostic ultrasound are available when imaging is needed — no referral, no second trip.

Treatment options at United Foot & Leg

Stretching, footwear, and orthotic guidance

Most heel pain improves with a structured plan of fascia and Achilles stretching, supportive footwear changes, and arch support matched to your foot mechanics.

Anti-inflammatory and local treatment

Where medically appropriate, anti-inflammatory measures, padding, taping, or cortisone injection can calm a painful flare while the underlying cause is corrected.

Advanced therapies

For stubborn cases, options such as in-office red light therapy with TheraDermix Allevea and other regenerative approaches may be recommended depending on the condition.

Surgical consultation when needed

Surgery is rarely needed for heel pain, but for the small group of patients whose pain persists despite proper treatment, Dr. Morris discusses the appropriate surgical options.
