Hammertoe Treatment in Atlanta, GA
A hammertoe is a toe that has curled or buckled at the middle joint, so the top of the toe rubs the top of your shoe with every step. Early hammertoes are still flexible; long-standing ones stiffen and start forming corns and calluses. United Foot & Leg treats hammertoes at every stage in Atlanta — from conservative relief to in-office toe-plasty correction.
What is hammertoe?
A hammertoe (and its cousins, mallet toe and claw toe) develops when the muscles, tendons, and joints of a toe fall out of balance and the toe bends into a contracted position. Corns and calluses form where the curled toe presses against footwear. Left alone, the contracture tends to stiffen over time — and a flexible hammertoe is far easier to correct than a rigid one.
Common symptoms
- A toe bent upward at the middle joint
- Corns or calluses on top of, between, or at the tip of the toe
- Pain with closed shoes or when walking
- Redness and inflammation over the bent joint
- Difficulty flexing or straightening the toe as it stiffens
- Crowding of toes, often alongside a bunion
Common causes & risk factors
- Muscle and tendon imbalance in the toe
- Inherited foot structure
- Bunions pushing the second toe out of alignment
- Tight, narrow, or high-heeled footwear
- Injury to the toe
- Arthritis and, in some patients, nerve or circulatory conditions
When should you see a foot doctor?
- A toe is curling or stiffening and footwear is getting painful
- Corns and calluses keep forming on the toe
- The toe no longer straightens on its own
- You are cutting corns off repeatedly — that is the pressure, not the skin
- A bunion is crowding the toe
How we evaluate it
Dr. Morris determines whether the toe is flexible or rigid, examines the joint and the footwear forces driving it, and evaluates neighboring problems like bunions. The stage of the deformity — flexible or fixed — is what determines which treatments make sense.
Treatment options at United Foot & Leg
Conservative care for flexible hammertoes
Early, flexible hammertoes respond to toe exercises and splinting, roomier footwear, protective pads, and treatment of the corns and calluses the deformity produces.
Toe-plasty (corn & hammertoe correction)
For deformities that keep producing painful corns, we remove the corn and/or correct the underlying toe deformity in office — typically performed under local anesthesia with no downtime, giving the toe a straighter, comfortable contour.
Coordinated correction
When a hammertoe is part of a bigger picture — bunions, long toes, crowding — the corrections are planned together so the forefoot works as a unit. Toe shortening is also available for disproportionately long toes.

TeleMedicine and On-Demand visits are prepaid online when you book; the remaining fees are paid in person at your visit — never online. In-office bunion surgery ($2,250, comparable at $3,950) includes the procedure and all post-op care and appointments for the 90-day post-op period.
We accept cash, HSA, credit cards, Stripe, and Zelle. All bookings are non-refundable.
What to expect
You leave the first visit knowing whether your hammertoe is still flexible, what conservative care can do, and whether correction is worth considering. Early-stage hammertoes often need very little; fixed ones get an honest conversation about correction.
Recovery & follow-up
Conservative care has no downtime. Toe-plasty correction is a minor in-office procedure under local anesthetic — you typically walk immediately afterward in regular shoes within days.
