Corn Removal in Atlanta, GA

A corn looks small, but it can make every step miserable. Corns are hardened cones of thickened skin that press into the deeper tissue of the toe, causing sharp pain with shoes or walking. At United Foot & Leg, painful corns are removed right in our Atlanta office — often on a same-day appointment — and, just as important, we address the toe problem or footwear issue that keeps growing them.

Dr. Morris Explains Corn Removal

A short video walkthrough is on the way — in the meantime, the full guide below covers everything Dr. Morris discusses in the exam room.

What is corn?

A corn (heloma) is a concentrated area of thickened, hard skin that forms where the toe experiences repeated pressure or friction — typically on tops of curled toes, between toes, or over bony prominences. Unlike a callus, which spreads broadly, a corn has a hard center that presses inward like a pebble, irritating the nerve-rich tissue beneath. Corns on the pinky toe and between toes (soft corns) are among the most painful.

Common symptoms

  • A hard, raised bump of skin on or between the toes
  • Sharp, localized pain when pressed or when wearing shoes
  • Tenderness that makes closed shoes unwearable
  • Inflamed or reddened skin around the corn
  • Soft, whitish thickened skin between the toes (soft corn)
  • Pain that returns no matter how often you file it down

Common causes & risk factors

  • Hammertoes, curled toes, or bone prominences rubbing against shoes
  • Tight, narrow, or pointed footwear
  • Toe deformities that change how the toe presses inside the shoe
  • Bunion prominence pushing the big toe against other toes
  • Abnormal foot mechanics causing uneven pressure
  • Sandals or shoes that let the toe rub directly against the edge

When should you see a foot doctor?

  • The corn is painful or interfering with shoes and walking
  • You have diabetes or poor circulation — never self-treat foot lesions
  • The corn keeps returning after filing or padding
  • The skin is broken, bleeding, or showing signs of infection
  • The corn is between the toes or on a curled toe — these usually need the underlying toe problem addressed

How we evaluate it

Dr. Morris identifies the corn, examines the toe mechanics causing it, and checks footwear fit. Over-the-counter acid removers are generally discouraged — they can burn healthy skin, especially risky for diabetic patients — so professional removal and correction of the cause is the reliable path.

Treatment options at United Foot & Leg

In-office corn removal

The corn is carefully debrided and removed in our office with little discomfort — most patients feel immediate relief. This is a routine in-office procedure, often done the same day you are seen.

Toe-plasty (correcting the underlying deformity)

If a curled toe, hammertoe, or bone prominence is what keeps forming the corn, correcting that deformity in office gives a lasting result instead of an endless trim cycle.

Padding, footwear, and prevention

Protective padding, toe sleeves, and footwear guidance prevent new corns from forming where the old one was removed.

What to expect

Removal itself takes minutes and most patients walk out more comfortable than they walked in. If a toe deformity is the root cause, we will show you exactly what it is and what fixing it involves so the corn does not simply grow back.

Recovery & follow-up

Simple corn removal has essentially no recovery period. Toe-plasty correction is a minor in-office procedure performed under local anesthetic, and you can typically walk immediately afterward.
