Plantar Fasciitis Treatment in Atlanta, GA

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel and arch pain we treat. It is the stabbing or aching pain at the bottom of the foot that is worst with the first steps of the day, after standing up from a chair, or after long periods on your feet. The good news: most cases respond well to a correctly built conservative treatment plan.

Dr. Morris Explains Plantar Fasciitis Treatment

A short video walkthrough is on the way — in the meantime, the full guide below covers everything Dr. Morris discusses in the exam room.

What is plantar fasciitis?

The plantar fascia is a strong band of tissue that supports your arch and runs from the heel to the base of the toes. When it is overloaded — by mechanics, activity, weight change, footwear, or prolonged standing — it becomes strained and inflamed at its attachment to the heel bone. Untreated, the strain can become chronic and lead to a heel spur and persistent arch breakdown.

Common symptoms

  • Sharp pain under the heel or arch with the first steps of the day
  • Pain that eases with movement but returns after rest
  • Aching, burning, or pulling sensation along the arch
  • Tenderness when pressing the inside of the heel bone
  • Pain after long standing, walking, or exercise
  • Tightness in the calf and Achilles often accompanying the pain

Common causes & risk factors

  • Flat arches or very high arches that overload the fascia
  • Long hours standing or walking on hard surfaces
  • A sudden increase in running or activity
  • Unsupportive footwear — worn shoes, thin soles, flat sandals
  • Tight calf muscles and Achilles tendon
  • Weight gain, pregnancy, or occupational demands

When should you see a foot doctor?

  • Morning heel or arch pain lasts more than 2–3 weeks
  • Pain is changing how you walk
  • Rest, ice, and store-bought inserts are not helping
  • The pain is worsening instead of improving
  • You have numbness, tingling, or swelling along with the pain

How we evaluate it

Dr. Morris examines the arch and heel, checks calf and Achilles flexibility, analyzes your foot mechanics and gait, and rules out other causes of heel pain such as nerve problems or fracture. On-site X-ray or ultrasound is used when needed.

Treatment options at United Foot & Leg

Structured conservative program

The core treatment combines specific plantar fascia and calf stretching, footwear modification, arch support or custom orthotics as indicated, activity modification, and taping or padding during painful phases.

Cortisone injection when appropriate

For severe flares, a local anti-inflammatory injection can break the pain cycle while the long-term program takes effect. Used deliberately, not as a first resort.

TheraDermix Allevea red light therapy

In-office red light therapy combined with transdermal medication may support tissue recovery in persistent cases. At-home devices are also available.

Advanced options for chronic cases

Patients whose fasciitis resists months of proper conservative care are discussed individually — including regenerative options and, rarely, surgical release.

What to expect

You will know the exact plan after one visit. Most patients improve steadily over several weeks with compliance to the stretching and support program. The goal is not to mask the pain but to unload the fascia so it can heal.

Recovery & follow-up

There is no downtime — treatment happens within your normal routine. Improvements typically build week over week; chronic cases simply take longer than fresh ones.
