Foot & Ankle Arthritis Treatment in Atlanta, GA

Arthritis in the foot and ankle tends to be under-appreciated — people expect it in the hands or knees, but the joints of the feet absorb your full body weight with every step. Stiffness at the big toe, a deep ache across the top of the foot, or an ankle that no longer trusts stairs are all common reasons patients find us.

Arthritis cannot be erased, but it can absolutely be managed — most patients walk comfortably for years with the right combination of footwear, orthotics, injections, and strengthening. United Foot & Leg serves arthritis patients throughout Atlanta, Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, Buckhead and surrounding North Atlanta communities.

What is foot and ankle arthritis?

Arthritis is the loss or wearing down of the smooth cartilage that lets joints glide, producing pain, stiffness, swelling, and in time bone spurs and joint deformity. In the foot it most often affects the big toe (hallux rigidus), the midfoot, and the ankle — commonly after an old injury, decades of wear, inflammatory conditions like gout or rheumatoid arthritis, or simply the structure you were born with. Each joint responds to different treatments, which is why the specific diagnosis matters.

Common symptoms

  • Deep joint pain that worsens with walking, stairs, or standing
  • Morning stiffness or stiffness after sitting that loosens with movement
  • Swelling around the affected joint
  • Stiffness and limited motion at the big toe — trouble bending it
  • Bone spurs you can feel or see, or rubbing in shoes
  • Changing the way you walk to favor the painful joint
  • Grinding or aching in the ankle on uneven ground

Common causes & risk factors

  • Osteoarthritis — cumulative wear on the joint over a lifetime
  • Post-traumatic arthritis, after a fracture or severe sprain
  • Rheumatoid and other inflammatory arthritis
  • Gout-related joint damage
  • Structural problems — flat feet or high arches that overload specific joints
  • Prior injury to the joint cartilage, even years earlier

When should you see a foot doctor?

  • Joint pain or stiffness that limits the walking you want to do
  • A big toe that no longer bends comfortably
  • Swelling and aching that persist for weeks
  • Over-the-counter inserts and shoe changes no longer keep up
  • Arthritis is changing your gait — favoring one joint strains others
  • You want to know which treatments, from injections to surgery, fit your joints

How we evaluate it

We examine which joints are actually affected, check range of motion and gait, and use on-site X-rays to see cartilage loss, spurs, and joint alignment. Because foot arthritis has several distinct forms with different treatments, the examination and imaging together determine the plan — not a generic “arthritis” label.

Treatment options at United Foot & Leg

Footwear and orthotics

Stiff-soled or rocker-bottom shoes and targeted orthotics reduce the bending forces on painful joints — often the single most effective conservative step for big-toe and midfoot arthritis.

Hyaluronic acid joint injections

For appropriate joints, in-office lubricating (hyaluronic acid) injections can reduce pain and improve joint glide — a well-established option for arthritic and chronically painful joints.

Medical management

Anti-inflammatory medication and, for inflammatory arthritis, co-management with your rheumatologist or primary physician address the disease itself, not just the symptom.

Surgical options

When conservative care no longer carries you, joint-preserving and joint-reconstructive procedures — from spur removal to fusion — are discussed honestly. Dr. Morris performs surgery at the Atlanta Center for Foot and Ankle Surgery in Sandy Springs.

What to expect

The goal is measured in function: walking farther with less pain, stairs without guarding, shoes that no longer hurt. Most patients layer treatments over time — footwear and orthotics first, injections when needed, surgery only when everything else has been used up.

Recovery & follow-up

Conservative treatments have no downtime. Injections may need a day or two of reduced activity. Surgical recovery depends entirely on the procedure — from days for spur removal to weeks of protected healing for joint fusion — and is discussed in detail before any decision.
