Ingrown Toenail Treatment in Atlanta, GA

An ingrown toenail is one of the most common problems we treat at United Foot & Leg — and one of the most miserable. The edge of the nail digs into the surrounding skin, causing pain, redness, swelling, and sometimes infection. If you are searching for ingrown toenail removal in Atlanta, you do not have to live with it: this is a quick in-office procedure, and same-day appointments are often available.

Dr. Morris Explains Ingrown Toenail Treatment

A short video walkthrough is on the way — in the meantime, the full guide below covers everything Dr. Morris discusses in the exam room.

What is ingrown toenail?

An ingrown toenail (onychocryptosis) develops when the edge or corner of a toenail — most often on the big toe — grows into the soft skin beside it. The skin becomes inflamed, may grow over the nail, and can become infected. Infected ingrown toenails may drain pus and can spread if untreated, especially for patients with diabetes or poor circulation.

Common symptoms

  • Pain and tenderness along one or both sides of the toenail
  • Redness and swelling around the nail edge
  • Skin growing over the edge of the nail
  • Warmth in the toe
  • Drainage of clear fluid or pus, or a foul odor
  • Pain when wearing shoes or pressure on the toe
  • Overgrowth of tissue (proud flesh) on a long-standing ingrown nail

Common causes & risk factors

  • Improper nail trimming — cutting nails too short or rounding the corners
  • Tight or narrow shoes that press the nail edge into the skin
  • Naturally curved (involuted) or thick nail shape
  • Injury to the toe, such as stubbing or dropping something on it
  • Repetitive pressure from sports, work boots, or activity
  • Heredity — some families simply have nail shapes that grow inward

When should you see a foot doctor?

  • Pain that lasts more than a few days or keeps coming back
  • Signs of infection: pus, spreading redness, warmth, or odor
  • You have diabetes or poor circulation — never wait with a toe infection
  • Home soaks are not improving it
  • The same nail keeps becoming ingrown (a permanent fix may be an option)

How we evaluate it

At your appointment, Dr. Jason E. Morris examines the toe, determines whether the nail is infected, and reviews your health history — including diabetes, circulation, and any blood thinners — before recommending treatment. On-site imaging is available if bone involvement or deeper infection is suspected.

Treatment options at United Foot & Leg

Partial nail removal (ingrown toenail removal)

For most patients, the offending edge of the nail is removed right in our office under local anesthetic — the toe is numbed, the sliver of nail causing the problem is removed, and you walk out the same day. Removal usually brings rapid relief of pain and pressure.

Permanent nail-edge prevention (matrixectomy)

For recurrent ingrown toenails, the cells at the nail edge that keep regrowing the problem sliver can be treated so that edge never grows back. This prevents the nail from becoming ingrown again in the same spot.

Infection care

If the toe is infected, we clean the area, address the drainage, and where medically appropriate prescribe medication. If you are diabetic or have circulation problems, we watch these closely until healed.

Home care guidance

After treatment you get clear instructions on keeping the toe clean, proper footwear during healing, and how to trim your nails going forward so the problem does not return.

What to expect

Most patients arrive in pain and leave comfortable. The toe is fully numbed before anything is done, so removal itself is not painful — the shot is the pinch you feel, not the procedure. The visit typically takes well under an hour, and you can walk normally afterward. Expect mild soreness for a few days.

Recovery & follow-up

Healing from a simple nail-edge removal commonly takes 1–2 weeks; a permanent matrixectomy can take longer to fully settle. You may be asked to soak the toe, apply ointment, and wear open or roomy shoes for a short time. We see you back if needed to confirm the area is healing well.
